What is taught? 

Year 7-  

Who do we think we are? An overview of the world in which we live. Looking at our location in the world and our connections with the rest of the world. 

Time Traveller - Local geography looking at the growth and changes in the area 

Action in the Atmosphere - Looking at the difference between weather and climate and the impacts it has on our everyday lives. 

Pole to Pole  - An overview of the worlds biomes with a focus on the tropical rainforest 

Year 8 -  

Who wants to be billionaire? - Inequalities that exist within the world 

Risky Places - Natural hazards that make the world a 'risky' place to live 

Global Fashion - Have you ever thought about where your Nike trainers have come from? 

Geography of Science - How will humans actions impact the future world? 

Year 9 - 

•The challenge of natural hazards – earthquakes/volcanoes/weather hazards e.g. tropical storms, climate change) 

•Physical landscapes in the UK – coastal and river landscapes and the issues that surround them and the management of them) 

•The changing economic world – development globally and within the UK/migration 

Year 10 -  

•Living world (tropical rainforests/deciduous forests/deserts/tundra) 

•Urban issues and challenges – shanty towns/cities 

•The changing economic world – development globally and within the UK/migration 

•Geographical skills: fieldwork task 1 

Year 11 -  

•The challenge of resource management – food/water/energy provision 

•Geographical skills: fieldwork task 2 

•Issue evaluation – A resource booklet will be available twelve weeks before the date of the exam so that students have the opportunity to work through the resources, enabling them to become familiar with the material. 

Assessment (Examining Board AQA):

•100 % of exams (including two compulsory fieldwork visits) 

•Paper 1 – Living with the physical environment (35%)  

•Paper 2 – Challenges in the human environment (35%) 

•Paper 3 – Geographical applications (30%) 

 

 

How is it taught? 

Key Skills in Geography include:  

•Undertaking of a fieldwork enquiry – developing transferable skills in research, data collection, analysis and evaluation. 

•Researching- working independently to produce a sustained written argument, particularly in controlled assessment tasks 

•Written/Verbal Communication – including preparing debates, speeches, role play and group discussions, report writing and data presentation. 

•Debating - The ability to debate controversial topics while respecting the views of others, putting forward a convincing argument, with logic and evidence 

•Data handling – mathematical and statistical skills  

•Analysis– Reasoning, organising and evaluating information 

•Critical Thinking – Questioning and investigating issues affecting the world and people’s lives, past, present and future 

•Working independently and within a team – considering differing ideas and coming to an agreed consensus.
