What is taught? 

50% NEA – This is the ‘coursework’ element where you explore problems and create design solutions through research, drawings, modelling and working with wood/metal/plastics. 

50% exam – An exam about materials, processes, sustainability and ethical issues that revolve around design. 


How is it taught? 

Year 9 

You will research how polymer (plastic) products are made in the real world through the design, manufacture, analysis and evaluation of the following products: 

•A memory stick casing using the 3D printer. 

•A mood light for a small child that focuses on texture. 

Year 10  

Lessons are split into 2 each week: 

•Theory of materials, processes and design theory. 

•Designing and/or Making modules include interior design, designing for developing countries, futuristic products, professional drawings skills and headphone wraps. 

Year 11 

Controlled assessment (50%) made up of: 

•Identifying and researching a design problem and potential stakeholders 


•Making (only 15% of the controlled assessment) 

•Evaluation and Testing 

Revision of materials, process and design theory in preparation for 50% exam. 


What makes your subject unique? 

Design and Technology is such an exciting and innovative subject that allows learners to be creative in their thought processes to design products for an ever-advancing technological world.  DT allows you to explore current products such as computer consoles, mobile phone, toys, storage – it looks at how and why these products are made and how they will and could change in the future years.  DT complements and combines many skills and knowledge from subjects across the curriculum such as Maths, English, Science, Geography, History and PEARS and relates to these subjects in a practical way, for example – how many mobile phone cases could be made from 1Kg of a thermopolymer?
